Some of the stories are potpourri, subtle clouds of poignant fragrances, while others are awash with the stench of human evils. Some open wide windows to the smallest of domestic detail, and some observe cogs in the greatest of cataclysms. This book has everything from humor to fantasy to true-to-life historic fictions, even to a gaze into possible futures.

SUPERMAN CAN FIND ANOTHER GIRL by Liz Fyne

`Breathing. It was a simple thing. It was something you missed.’

Liz Fyne establishes the voice of her MC within the first half page. Written in first person POV, she demonstrates a delicate pen with penetrating imagery and unexpected subjects ... like breathing.

Here's another: `...when we sat in his car, in the restaurants, in his big old house with the hot tub he said he never used and the bathroom where the tiled floor was only partly finished. It had been in that same unfinished state for months.’

Here's a few more snippets that caused me to smile.

`Time swells and contracts in inverse proportion to misery and joy.’

`He was the best I could do for a hero.’

`For me he arranged a job at a small gallery. I showed pieces that were supposedly art but mostly resembled aluminum cans.’

Fyne extends the analogy three pages later when the MC describes the objects in the gallery as `the art-inspired cannery.’ A masterful technique that binds the piece together.

A delightful read that starts off the anthology with quality writing.

RUSSELL FEHMER'S WAR by Lenora Rain-Lee Good
Tension builds slowly but steadily in this tale. A mysterious curse shrouds a remote village in a steamy Latin-American jungle, presenting Russell Fehmer with an important mission. A challenge that must be met to free the village from its past. The outcome will surprise. Do not be deceived by the first few pages, the pace accelerates, offering an enjoyable read.

The author paints a vivid picture of life in the Latin-American jungle. Here is an example of her skillful use of metaphor when describing what the MC observed the day he arrived.

`Had there been sidewalks, he speculated, they would have been rolled up and put away during the midday heat.’

THE HERO OF STOLEN TIME by Ian Lahey
Speech-impeded wizards should avoid casting spells. Wise words spoken by the MC, who happens to be a thief, while dealing with a wizard and his dangerous potions. The wizard's lisp fouls up the magic, creating unpredictable twists in the story involving theft of time itself. This zany tale careens sticky-fingered Ratscrap through the English forest, with characters bumping into trees, local thugs too dumb to stand and of course the pretty wench serving libations at the local alehouse. All the antics lead to a hilarious ending that will tickle you to chuckles. A light hearted romp through olde England's pastoral countryside during times gone by.

SPYING ON THE SPY by Lisa Cox begins slowly but builds steadily into an intriguing tale of espionage and treason circa the War of 1812 between Britain and fledgling America. Cox' creates a convincing story around the innocent debutante, Georgina Vandenberg—a Senator's daughter—that grabs your attention and won't release it till the end. A delightful story.

THE DORK by Diane Hall will bring back memories of your first love and the nightmare of school life—that is, if you were a late bloomer and not athletically inclined. Wonderfully told from the Dork's point of view, you will enjoy it.

I could go on about the next dozen stories, each containing admirable examples of solid writing in this venue, but my review is already lengthy. I recommend reading the rest for yourself. Well worth it.

Spies Heroes edition by Maria Elizabeth McVoy Dixiane Hallaj Marjorie Rommel Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

"Spies and Heroes" is a great short-story collection reflecting stories from all walks of life. I especially enjoyed "Superman Can Find Another Girl," by Liz Fyne. It is poignant and beautifully written. I would highly recommend it.
I greatly enjoyed Maria McVoy's Silent Night/Stille Nacht. She produced a very heart-warming tale for the holiday season. It was a lesson in love and compassion in the face of tough times on the battlefield. She uses great imagery to really set the mood.
S&H's latest anthology, Spies and Heroes, has someone for everyone. There's mystery, intrigue, romance and humor. It's a great book for the guest room. My favorites are Russell Fehmer's War by Lenora Rain Lee Good and You are Garden by Jane Buchan. You'll find your own.
I really enjoyed reading Spies and Heroes. Its first story Superman Can Find another Girl covers young woman’s inner journey in pursue of happiness. It is engaging and easy to read, yet the messages it carries definitely provide some food for thought, while the twist near the end of the story makes you want to read it all over again. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be reminded that more often than not happiness can be found in simple things.
This book is a great read to curl up with and enjoy all at once or pause in between each story at a time. Each story is unique and might involve history, myth, romance, tragedy. For example, Silent Night/Stille Nacht by Maria McVoy is a fun read as she marvelously weaves a story about a Christmas celebration on a battlefield. She cleverly uses history and drama to make this a real page turner.
All of the stories are delightfully entertaining and worth the read!
Silent Night, Stille Nacht

Silent Night, Stille Nacht is a must read, not only for the holiday season, but for year round enjoyment and inspiration. It is a story that inspires hope for the future and hope for the human soul. It is the story of, Nathaniel, a young soldier gone off the war, and the parallel stories of his family, family memories and his fellow soldiers.
War, a human tragic flaw, will always be with us. It is a flaw that devastates all that we love but it is a flaw that inspires hope for a better future and is just as relevant today as it was in the World War I era. The “light” which dwells in all of our souls has the power to overcome our flaws and give us peace; we just need to find the path to make it so.
The author uses the written letter/invitation as the device to, seamlessly weave the tale together, and to give us all hope for the possibility of a better future.
Every individual person has a particular image that pops into their mind or a set of traits when thinking about a spy or a hero. Some see heroes as infallible. Others find heroes in the unexpected, the flawed. As for spies, you never know who they are.

In the anthology, Spies and Heroes, various authors give their take on what it means to be a spy or a hero, and not one of the stories is ever the same. The face of a spy or a hero constantly changes as you read through this collection of stories. Some stories have just the right dose of humor and others are entirely serious. You'll also find that there is an array of genres in just one book. You'll see heroes and spies in a speculative setting, historical atmospheres, and contemporary stories. In other words, you are sure to find something you'll like.

Stories that particularly stood out to me are "The Hero of Stolen Time," "Spying on the Spy," "Honoring Debts," and "If I Should Die Before I Wake." I encourage anyone who wants short enjoyable reads to pick up this anthology. You may not prefer the stories I have mentioned, but you are sure to find stories that you'll like and are memorable.
